Yes, but they offer separate memberships – that was the bit I was referring to, I suppose. I wonder how well they do given the number of players in the market at both ends of the spectrum.

Not all….I have stayed at many Hyatt properties around the world, Caribbean,Dubai,Mexico,Singapore and Bali. (Also the US which atm is expensive, but that’s the US now) to name a few, admittedly I didn’t have a car to park but I was not ripped off by fees. Believe me I’d be the first to complain if I thought the property was disproportionately charging me for a service. I am scheduled to travel in august to Kenya,Uganda and Rwanda for safaris, 3 weeks in total, and apart from the lodges in the Maasai Mara NP and Amboseli NP, have booked Hyatt properties where possible, I have checked ahead and I am confident that I will not experience any issues….

They then tried to charge me missed payment fees, despite having submitted cancellation in writing months beforehand, because the club manager was hopeless at their job. Absolutely useless organisation. I am enjoying Virgin Active and was interested, this morning, to see a Virgin Voyages tie-up occurring.

I have long wondered how well Livingwell-branded gyms do. Competition in the market is fierce, and it isn’t as if half of the Livingwell gyms are particularly great.

Yes.

HI on Bath Road my number one choice for T3, although begrudge paying £130+ if arriving after 9pm and leaving at 5am or so.
Stayed at the Ibis Budget for around £80 last time I overnighted for a few hours at LHR. 5 min or so walk to Hounslow West tube, so only a stop further than the HGI (and more in the area food and shops wise).

No need for any fancy restaurants, gyms, spas etc. I won’t use (i.e. Sofitel with its £250 rates for a bog standard room).

Stay occasionally in the NW at hotels that have a Pure Gym near by. My membership lets me use them usually – no pool, but a wet pair of swimming trunks isn’t always a good thing when travelling especially when there’s a potential lack of drying facilities – never seem to dry that well hung up in a bathroom, and not always a radiator to put them on.
Shame there’s no Pure Gyms to use that near to Heathrow. Staines / Felton? or somewhere, but a bit of a jaunt without a car (there must be a leisure centre or two locally though?)

If you asked me do I want to spend £20 for each night of my stay to access the facilities at my leisure I’d consider if it was worth that to me and probably think the hotel was purely “upselling” to those who need it.

If for example with our corporate TA or personally using an OTA, let’s say when searching for a hotel I select ‘Pool’ as a filter then it should be possible to include any surcharge for that amenity in the quoted rate.

Otherwise I’m presented with a price I cannot possibly achieve for the service bundle I have searched for which makes informed choices very difficult for the consumer.

The price is being carved out of the room rate presumably specifically to enable the headline rate to remain low on Expedia etc, which is really only fair IMO if there is a mechanism for pricing packages correctly

Not saying you are right or wrong but sill wager that view doesn’t really work in practice.

Given – as you say – the cost is pretty significant, it makes sense to distribute it across all guests as a means of incrementally increasing the value of the property in the market. (The challenge in a OTA-dominated world is how to do that effectively but that’s another discussion.)

To actually have the pool funded entirely by pool users would mean no pool. You could then move to other parts of the hotel – many of those are used by a small subset but have significant costs too and then we’re individually paying for parking, gyms, concierge desk, night-time reception cover, and so forth and I don’t know as that’s where we want to go.

Ryanair basically already do what y out describe (have users shoulder the cost and also use it as a means of impacting behaviours) and I’m fairly confident most in here are not huge advocates of it
