I agree with your maths. Now you’ve got the voucher it is a straight trade off based on what you spend – assuming the app gives you the option of downgrading. If it doesn’t you need to cancel and then can’t reapply for 6 months. Similarly, there is no guarantee you’d be able to upgrade again without cancelling and waiting.

Note that if you downgrade you’ll earn another voucher if you spend £20k. The spend counter resets.

I’m intending to keep the AMEX card long-term, but am wondering about doing hokey cokey with Avios.

In other words, now having received the Voucher from Barclaycard with the Plus card after channeling a lot of spend to it over a few months, I can save £20 a month by changing to the free Barclaycard Avios card.

I don’t think that I will spend enough a month to justify the £20 – to do so, I would need to spend £4000 a month on the card earn an extra 2000 points (the equivalent of £20).

Any thoughts or others’ experience?

Best,

Gary
