Thanks rob, I am looking for some internal routes on ba.com for AA and nothing seems to come up for example for NYC->LAX, it was a regular avios booking I was looking for as the cash price is high for BDA-MIA

I’m confused as I was under the impression you could book AA flights from BAEC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your best bet is to set a budget (after deciding whether you want to fly from the UK or would go to Amsterdam etc) and book when a sale comes along which offers it.

I suspect £1750 may be enough, and it may end up being Lufthansa given their activity in recent years.

@BJ, Now I remember that it was 15,000 Avios on CX plus the very small amount of taxes. I must of done so many of those routes in the day and I also remember paying for my brother to get to BKK from HKG for his 40th.

If you price LHR-BKK you have to pay longhaul APD rates regardless of any intermediate points. If you buy HEL-BKK then you don’t.

Yes, but I think you can still only upgrade AA and IB. You can obviously upgrade Qatar via Qatar but I cannot recall if feature was extended to Qatar and Aer Lingus by BA or not.

You can’t upgrade on partner airlines – only on AA in very specific circumstances, and on Qatar if you move points to QPrivClub and fly in a qualifying ticket type.

Interesting on AY; how long was your stopover and were the two flights booked on one PNR or two PNRs? You most likely ran into a problem with your business class availability on the short sector after requesting a stopover due to married segments.

Yes, I cannot remember either but it was significant. BA partner flight we changed to the distance chart in the article and then CX devaluation was applied to that so a double devaluation. BKK-HKG is zone 2 and as per the chart should be 16500 in business. That is what you will be charged if you book the Sri Lankan or Royal Jordanian 5th freedom flights but as you have found they’ll charge you 25000 on Cathay. Ironically, you get longhaul flat beds on the two cheaper option but on Cathay you’ll most likely get the 2-class regional a330 with 2-2-2 recliners or worst still, the new regional a321s.

The last one about multi-partner pricing prompted me to consider Avios for a trip I needed to make. I got a great flight with Finnair using Avios – so thanks for the article that led to that!! Today’s article confirms the Avios I was charged for my flight on a single partner basis, so it looks to be very accurate – a great piece of work. The Qatar chart is really useful too – if you can ever find J availability!!

A couple of interesting points:
I wanted to break my flight in Helsinki which you cant do by booking online so I called and booked with BA. The agent was very helpful and found the flights I wanted. However, despite the BA website showing me there were 6 business class seats available on the HEL-LHR sector, the agent insisted there was no Avios availability in Business class on any flight that day. I booked economy for that sector on that basis. I can still see 6 business seats available online on that sector!!
Also, pricing each leg separately gives a taxes and fees total of £136.88 – but if you price it as LHR-BKK the taxes is over £250!!!!! Strangely, the BA booking confirmation shows taxes and fees as £0.00. I’m guessing that this is something to do with UK origin applying higher taxes to the total flight booking, but it just seems wrong to me!!

Regional CX rewards were devalued by BA back in 2021.

IME and based on comments within the forum during the last few weeks, the Qatar glitches have been, or are in the process of being sorfed out.

The problem booking AY flights operated by NORRA sadly persists when booking via BAEC. A datapoint on whether these can be booked via QRPC would be useful.
