How many Avios do you need for flights on BA partner airlines?

Three years ago, British Airways brought in a new pricing chart for Avios bookings on partner airlines. As we have barely mentioned it since, I thought we’d take another look.

This article is for bookings using ONE partner airline or for a British Airways flight combined with one partner airline.

If you looking to book a flight using TWO OR MORE partner airlines (eg Cathay Pacific from London to Hong Kong, connecting to Malaysia Airlines from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur) then you need to use the multi-partner chart.

I covered the multi-partner Avios redemption chart earlier this week in my article about getting to Australia and New Zealand on Avios. The multi-partner chart is used to price flights which involve two airlines other than British Airways and which can be outstanding value.

How many Avios do you need for flights on British Airways partner airlines?

How much are Avios flights on partner airlines?

This article is not relevant for redemptions on Iberia or Aer Lingus, which are sister companies of British Airways. These use (more or less) the same redemption chart as British Airways, allow the use of British Airways American Express 2-4-1 vouchers and have peak and off-peak pricing.

For everyone except Qatar Airways:

Annoyingly, British Airways does not publish a chart of partner Avios pricing. That said, it doesn’t publish a chart for its own flights either these days! The chart below was put together via manually looking up different flights.

This chart applies only to flights booked with British Airways partners Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Japan Airlines, LATAM, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines. Oman Air will be added in 2024.

Remember that:

  • this is one-way pricing
  • BA charges by leg, so for connecting flights you need to price each leg separately and
  • ‘taxes and charges’ are due on top
  • you can use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher on Iberia and Aer Lingus, but not other partner airlines
  • you cannot use a Barclays upgrade voucher on any partner airline

Here is the current British Airways partner chart:

British Airways Avios partner reward chart

British Airways has disabled the online reward flight price calculator. The best way of working out how much a flight will be, without doing dummy bookings on ba.com, is to look up the distance using the Great Circle Mapper tool at gcmap.com. Input the relevant airport codes, eg LHR-LAX, and click ‘Distance’.

The old 2x, 3x, 4x system no longer applies

With partner airlines, British Airways has moved away from a multiplication system for Premium Economy, Business and First Class Avios redemptions.

Up to 2019, First Class was always four times the Economy fare, and Business Class 2-3 times depending on the mileage. This is no longer the case.

Short domestic flights under 650 miles in the United States are priced differently. These remain at 7,500 Avios in Economy, 15,000 in Business and 18,000 in First. You can read more about why short domestic USA flights are priced separately here.

There is no off-peak pricing with partner airlines

As you can see from the table above, there is no off-peak pricing. Every day is a peak day with partners.

You can exploit the mileage chart to your advantage

If you have the time and inclination, you can save Avios and probably taxes and charges by starting your journey outside the UK.

Helsinki to Tokyo, for example, is 4,864 miles. This means that a one-way business class ticket on Finnair uses Zone 6 pricing of 77,250 Avios.

Using Japan Airlines from Heathrow to Tokyo is a longer flight (5,964 miles) which falls into Zone 7 and costs 92,750 Avios one way. You could make a saving by buying a cheap flight to Helsinki for cash – and that’s before you factor in any saving in taxes and charges.

(I am assuming that no British Airways availability is there, which is realistic given demand for Japan at the moment.)

Qatar Airways Avios redemption chart

Booking Avios flights on Qatar Airways:

Back in March 2022, Qatar Airways adopted Avios as its loyalty currency.

This brought many benefits to UK-based Avios collectors, including the ability to earn and spend Avios on the new airline, hotel and car hire partners listed here.

Below is the Qatar Airways Avios redemption chart for flights from the UK, excluding routes to the Americas and Europe as these make no sense due to backtracking.

A few points to note:

  • you can book at these rates on EITHER ba.com or qatarairways.com, as long as you select Qatar Airways flights – the Avios pricing, availability and taxes are meant to be identical across both sites although there are glitches
  • If you are in a British Airways Executive Club Household Account and need to use Avios from both accounts to make a booking, you will have to book at ba.com
  • you can book at qatarairways.com from 360 days prior to departure – if you are booking the same flight at ba.com you need to wait until 355 days prior to departure
  • if you book on qatarairways.com you may be offered flights at double the figures shown below. This are marked with a green square in the booking engine and represent ‘extra’ Avios availability which Qatar Airways is willing to make available for double Avios. You cannot see these extra seats on ba.com.
  • you may find it easier to search for the onward leg first (eg Doha to Bangkok) and then look for the most suitable and available connection. This could be from Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester or Edinburgh, or even – to save on taxes – Amsterdam or elsewhere in Europe.
What do Qatar Airways Avios flights cost from the UK?

How much are Avios redemptions on Qatar Airways from the UK?

Qatar Airways currently flies to Doha from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. Cardiff is expected to return later in 2023. All flights below require an aircraft change in Doha.

We have not included First Class flights in this chart. First Class is only available on the A380 fleet which only operates on selected routes, and Qatar Airways does not guarantee to make any First Class reward space available.

Conclusion

I hope this article has given you a good overview of the costs and the process for booking Avios redemption flights on a British Airways partner airline.

Don’t forget to learn about the multi-partner Avios redemption chart from this article, which is what you need if you want to use two partner airlines on the same booking. It can also be better value than booking a redemption flight with one partner.

  • BJ says:

The chart no longer applies to CX rewards within Asia. Regional CX rewards were devalued by BA back in 2021.

IME and based on comments within the forum during the last few weeks, the Qatar glitches have been, or are in the process of being sorfed out.

The problem booking AY flights operated by NORRA sadly persists when booking via BAEC. A datapoint on whether these can be booked via QRPC would be useful.

  • Stuart says:

Does the multi partner have to be just that? Basically it can’t include a BA flight at all?

    • Rob says:

You can include BA IF you include two other carriers too. It can’t be BA + 1 other.

      • Stuart says:

Great, so I can add a domestic on. I’m guessing this will make touring around the US a lot easier since Alaska joined Oneworld.

  • Chris K says:

Great article. The last one about multi-partner pricing prompted me to consider Avios for a trip I needed to make. I got a great flight with Finnair using Avios – so thanks for the article that led to that!! Today’s article confirms the Avios I was charged for my flight on a single partner basis, so it looks to be very accurate – a great piece of work. The Qatar chart is really useful too – if you can ever find J availability!!

    A couple of interesting points:
I wanted to break my flight in Helsinki which you cant do by booking online so I called and booked with BA. The agent was very helpful and found the flights I wanted. However, despite the BA website showing me there were 6 business class seats available on the HEL-LHR sector, the agent insisted there was no Avios availability in Business class on any flight that day. I booked economy for that sector on that basis. I can still see 6 business seats available online on that sector!!
Also, pricing each leg separately gives a taxes and fees total of £136.88 – but if you price it as LHR-BKK the taxes is over £250!!!!! Strangely, the BA booking confirmation shows taxes and fees as £0.00. I’m guessing that this is something to do with UK origin applying higher taxes to the total flight booking, but it just seems wrong to me!!

    • BJ says:

Interesting on AY; how long was your stopover and were the two flights booked on one PNR or two PNRs? You most likely ran into a problem with your business class availability on the short sector after requesting a stopover due to married segments.

    • Nick says:

If you price LHR-BKK you have to pay longhaul APD rates regardless of any intermediate points. If you buy HEL-BKK then you don’t.

  • Gordon says:

Thanks for this article Rob, Very useful.

  • The Original Nick. says:

@BJ , regional rewards were devalued? I have just checked HKG – BKK, 25000 Avios + £51 in J. I was using Avios to do regional routes a lot some 6 – 10 years ago but I can’t remember what i was paying. Was it a big devaluation?

    • BJ says:

Yes, I cannot remember either but it was significant. BA partner flight we changed to the distance chart in the article and then CX devaluation was applied to that so a double devaluation. BKK-HKG is zone 2 and as per the chart should be 16500 in business. That is what you will be charged if you book the Sri Lankan or Royal Jordanian 5th freedom flights but as you have found they’ll charge you 25000 on Cathay. Ironically, you get longhaul flat beds on the two cheaper option but on Cathay you’ll most likely get the 2-class regional a330 with 2-2-2 recliners or worst still, the new regional a321s.

      • The Original Nick. says:

@BJ, Now I remember that it was 15,000 Avios on CX plus the very small amount of taxes. I must of done so many of those routes in the day and I also remember paying for my brother to get to BKK from HKG for his 40th.

        • BJ says:

I couldn’t recall if it was 12.5k or 15k, regardless a sharp increase. 16.5k still decent on Sri Lankan and RJ though.

  • Mikeact says:

Are there any significant savings to be made by starting with Qatar at one of their European ‘hubs’ ?

    • BJ says:

Berlin is cheaper I believe, also options from Eastern Europe but be careful of the aircraft used the further East you go.

    • G says:

Stockholm/Oslo tend to be quite cheap places to begin long haul fares from.

    • David says:

some data i had collected for future use in QR. all J one way.

      AMS-DOH 43K £112 taxes fees
same from DUB, DUS, BRU, FRA, VIE
      lhr-doh 43k £172
      doh-lhr 43k £87
      doh-dub 43k £85.20

      • ADS says:

i’m surprised the savings are so small

hard to imagine it would make sense to add an extra flight to save 60 quid

  • masaccio says:

Are upgrades calculated as the difference between class redemptions? For example 6,000 miles PE to Business is 92750 – 62000 = 30750?

    • Rob says:

You can’t upgrade on partner airlines – only on AA in very specific circumstances, and on Qatar if you move points to QPrivClub and fly in a qualifying ticket type.

    • BJ says:

Yes, but I think you can still only upgrade AA and IB. You can obviously upgrade Qatar via Qatar but I cannot recall if feature was extended to Qatar and Aer Lingus by BA or not.

  • Robert Jenkins says:

A bit of a random question but as we are talking
QATAR….we are planning a trip to Japan in September/ October next year and I’d be keen to fly Qatar. Does anyone have any data points of what the best deal I could to get flying J? Also if another (decent) carrier would be significant cheaper?

    • Rob says:

Your best bet is to set a budget (after deciding whether you want to fly from the UK or would go to Amsterdam etc) and book when a sale comes along which offers it.

I suspect £1750 may be enough, and it may end up being Lufthansa given their activity in recent years.
