Whilst we don’t write about it much, Aer Lingus has its own Avios-earning credit card.

Our full review of the Aer Lingus Aer Credit Card, issued by Bank of Ireland, is here. It’s not very attractive – a terrible earning rate of 1 Avios per €4 spent and a €108 annual fee when you include the Government Stamp Duty.

On the upside, there are some decent soft benefits:

5000 Avios with Aer Lingus credit card
  • 2 free Aer Lingus tickets EVERY YEAR for spending €5,000 on the card (taxes apply)
  • 2 Fast Track & Priority Boarding passes every year
  • 2 lounge passes
  • Worldwide multi-trip travel insurance including winter sports

I’m not going to analyse the value of these soft benefits in detail because our review does it well enough.

For only the fourth time ever, I think, Bank of Ireland is offering a sign-up bonus on this card.

Until 16th February 2024, new cardholders who spend €1,000 by 16th May 2024 will receive a bonus of 5,000 Avios.

When you factor in the lounge passes and the two free short-haul flights, I think the card now becomes reasonable value for the first year. Whilst UK residents may find the earning rate very weak, there isn’t a lot of competition in the Irish market. I’d be reconsidering my options after the first year, however.

You can find out more, and apply, on the Bank of Ireland website here.

I hope that’s got an actual size photo. It would never fit in my wallet!

there’s some discussion on FT about how hard these are to actually book … which makes you question if the card is worth it, even with a little sign up bonus

Yes this was mentioned last time this article ran. Calling up and waiting for a few days to check if availability was even available? Clown show stuff.

Wow 5,000 avios … such generosity from EI

I think the best earning Avios card is now in Finland. It’s Aktia bank’s Finnair Visa, where AY Plats (OWE) earn 2 Avios/€ (OK, currently you earn 3 AY points/€, but that becomes 2 Avios/€ on 9/March), lower status somewhat less. The fee is 6€/month.

The catch – you need to be a Finnish resident, with Finnish social security number (and most likely local source of income)

You have to pay government stamp duty on any credit card, so probably fairer to say the card costs €6.50 x 12 = €78. Given lack of competition in Ireland, it’s not worth holding multiple cards anyway.

My last family worldwide travel insurance (which didn’t even include winter sports) cost €124, so that benefit alone covers the cost in my case.

I have had one of these since 2019 and have got great value for it. For example, have 2 return flights booked to Palma, Majorca in August this year which cost €47.38 in taxes and charges. The cash price today for same flights on EI website is €545. Previous years went to Dubrovnik and Lanzarote twice and got even better value. Its currently €74 for 2 to enter the Aspire Lounge in Cork and I haven’t had to pay for travel insurance since. The booking process is a bit of a pain alright but its a once a year thing to do and when done far enough in advance I haven’t had an issue. The avios earning rate is poor but its the only card on the Irish market that offers any at all.
