Decent Tokyo to Sydney First Class Avios availability on JAL – at a price

On 31st May, Japan Airlines is swapping the Boeing 787 currently used between Tokyo and Sydney for a larger Boeing 777.

This means that First Class seating will become available on this route.

At the moment, a decent chunk of dates have these seats available for Avios because Japan Airlines is a oneworld alliance member, alongside British Airways.

We’ve never reviewed the JAL SUITE in First Class but it looks pretty swanky – a fully enclosed suite – as the JAL website shows here.

Small it is not:

A return trip from Tokyo to Sydney in JAL First Class will cost 206,000 Avios + £597, as you can see here:

The good news is that availability is pretty decent for one person from 1st June 2024 onwards. Some dates even had two seats when I looked last night.

Of course, you also need to get to Tokyo which isn’t exactly an easy win for Avios. However, for anyone who likes to tick off leading First Class seats, this is an interesting opportunity.

Hat-tip to 2paxfly.

Booked this, conveniently need to get back to Melbourne sometime in September – adding on MEL made it 180,000 Avios, so I’ll pass on that, but HND-SYD gets the hard part out of the way in style.

  • Occasional Ranter says:

It’s 60k miles and minimal taxes each way with AA miles, if you have any of those kicking around. If not you can buy them for about 2p each, or I guess you can convert Amex points indirectly ?

I’ve flown JAL’s current first suite LHR-HND a few months ago. It’s ok, but (i) it’s on a 777 which is a tiring plane to fly long haul (ii) it’s quite old – monitor isn’t very high def, various other niggles. Service was great, some of the food was amazing, some was meh (iii) JAL have a reputation for keeping cabins a bit warm, though our flight was just about ok.

  • Occasional Ranter says:

sorry – meant to add for QFFlyer that if you book with AA, you can add a SYD-MEL leg (if seats available) for no extra cost

    • QFFlyer says:

Thanks – sadly I burned my AA miles at the end of last year on a MEL-SYD-BNE-APW, NAN-SYD-MEL circular trip (APW-NAN booked with Qantas points)!

Annoying but no biggie, between QF and VA seats between MEL/SYD are pretty easy to come by, so I’ll cross that bridge another day. Good idea for anyone with AA miles to hand though (although must admit I had no idea they were still this valuable, despite my first redemption using them being LHR-AKL in F for 80,000 – phenomenal value before it was devalued).

Does anyone know if this is a permanent or seasonal change? I’m looking at flights in Jan ’25 and its showing as a 787 with no F

  • Ronster says:

    Afternoon everyone

    Hope your all well.

Currently tracking A350 JAL F availability on the JFK-HND route.

Hoping to bag myself a May availability trip

Tangentially related – anyone know how reliably BA opens up reward availability two weeks out for TYO – LON? Looking at SeatSpy today, I can see decent availability every day up to and including 14 February, as well as some Tuesdays and Wednesdays later in February.

I’m looking to travel at the end of April, and happy to gamble somewhat on the availability being there when I need it. Will suck up the price of a cash ticket if all goes wrong, but would like to know how optimistic I can be.

Appreciate this is a crystal ball question, but grateful to hear of others’ past experiences.

    • Rob says:

If you’re not using a 241 then I’d be relatively comfortable given you’ve got BA, JAL and, as fall backs, Qatar and Cathay as options.

  • Joshua Critchley says:

    Hopefully not too many seats!
JAL First is meant for the ruling classes

  • Rizz says:

I flew JL F on the 777 – pretty dated but comfortable. Food and service impeccable, of course.
